Research Associate: Photonic Interconnects for Silicon Electronics (346269)

Salary range:£32,817 - £38,017 capped due to fundingFTE: 1 Term:Fixed (until 31/10/2024)Closing date: 21/02/2021Applications are sought for a Post Doctoral Research Associate position in integrated photonic devices. The position is based at the Institute of Photonics (IoP, Dept.of Physics) at the University of Strathclyde. The successful candidate will work with Dr Michael Strain, on the EPSRC funded project “Zero-change manufacturing of photonic interconnects for silicon electronics”. This project aims to develop hybrid material photonic waveguide systems for applications in intra-chip communications. This will involve the design and fabrication of optimized opto-electronic components (sources, waveguides, detectors) in semiconductor, dielectric and polymer materials and the direct integration of these optical devices with silicon electronic chips. The successful candidate will have access to state-of-the-art micro-fabrication laboratories, materials and processes at Strathclyde. In addition to design, modelling and fabrication of the devices, the successful candidate will be responsible for opto-electronic integration (flip-chip and/or transfer printing) and systems measurements (power performance, bandwidth, BER, etc.). A background in integrated optical device design and modelling, micro-fabrication and heterogeneous integration is desirable. The project is part of a wider collaboration between Strathclyde and the University of Sheffield, Fraunhofer UK, Stanford University and Alter Technologies. The appointed researcher will work closely with these partners with the opportunity for research visits to partners as well as travel for dissemination of results at international conferences. Our research team, with expertise in micro and nano-fabrication, integrated photonics and opto-electronic integration, are a collegiate and welcoming group and we are looking for a candidate who will enjoy working in the collaborative and dynamic environment at the IoP. We look forward to hearing from candidates who with good experimental background and strong oral and written communication skills.Candidates should have an academic or industrial R&D record in photonics or optoelectronics and a demonstrable ability to work both collaboratively and independently.*Whilst a Research Associate is ideally sought for this position, applications from candidates who are close to completing a PhD are also welcome. In such circumstances, appointment will be made at grade 6 level (Research Assistant) and duties and grade will be revised accordingly. For informal enquiries, please contact Dr Michael Strain, Reader and Fraunhofer UK / Royal Academy of Engineering Senior Research Fellow in Chipscale Photonics, michael.strain@strath.ac.uk .
