Grounds Person

The Academy Dollar Academy is an independent co-educational school, founded in 1818, with a school roll of some 1,300 pupils, of whom 90 are boarders accommodated in two Boys’ and two Girls’ Boarding Houses. The Academy is situated in about 50 acres of grounds amidst delightful scenery, in the small town of Dollar at the foot of the Ochil Hills, twelve miles east of Stirling. Edinburgh and Glasgow are both within an hour’s drive. We have a vacancy within our Grounds Department for a Grounds person. Reporting to the Head of Grounds they will be expected to play a significant role in the day to day maintenance of landscape and gardens whilst working with minimum supervision. The successful candidate will carry out practical skilled maintenance in line with the Grounds schedule whilst ensuring high standards are maintained. A full, clean driving licence is a pre-requisite for the post. Key Duties Play a significant role in the upkeep and improvement of the gardens which surround various Academy properties and will have knowledge of horticultural practice. Using equipment involved in landscape maintenance including road vehicles and trailers Competently carry out: o  Soil cultivation o  Manuring o  Site preparation o  Planning and surgery to trees, shrubs and plants o  Turfing o  Grass seed sowing o  Grass cutting o  Sports pitch maintenance o  Sports pitch marking o  Composting Operating and adjustment of: o  Tractors o  Ride-on mowers o  Hand mowers o  Hedge cutters o  Line markers o  Other horticultural equipment ·        Maintenance and checking of horticultural equipment under the guidance of the Head of Grounds ·        Ensuring the Academy is safely accessible including clearing of leaves in autumn and snow in winter and applying of salt in icy conditions ·        Carrying out and recording safety checks of all equipment before use ·        Awareness of all Health and Safety requirements applicable to landscape and horticultural operations Hours Normal hours of work will be 40 hours per week (3 hours of which are paid at overtime rate) and it is a requirement during term time to work on Saturday mornings in support of school sports activities. Flexibility on working overtime during periods of high activity is expected. Salary The base, gross annual salary for 40 hours will be paid at point 16 of the Scottish Joint Council for Local Government Officers pay scales - £22,580. Pension Our support staff are auto-enrolled in the Local Government Pension Scheme, to which the Governors make a very generous Employer’s Contribution. Holidays Inclusive of Bank Holidays and other Public Holidays, the Grounds Person will be entitled to 34 days per calendar year, rising to 39 days after five years’ service, to be taken by arrangement with the Head of Grounds and Bursar and subject to work commitments. School Fees Employees whose children attend the Academy are entitled to fee remission, and details will be made available to the successful candidate where relevant. Disclosure Scotland All appointments at Dollar Academy are subject to membership of the Disclosure Scotland Protection of Vulnerable Groups Scheme .
